Australian State OKs Chevron Gas Project
An Australian state government on Tuesday approved Chevron Corp.'s $11 billion Gorgon liquefied natural gas project subject to strict environmental controls.
Mark McGowan, the environment minister for Western Australia state, said the project would be approved subject to a 60 million Australian dollar ($47 million) commitment by Gorgon to conserve an endangered species of marine turtle and other threatened species.
In June, the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority recommended that the project be blocked to protect the dwindling population of flatback turtles, which nest on beaches shared by the proposed plant.
In his report, EPA Chairman Wally Cox said the project did not meet his agency's environmental objectives and was "environmentally unacceptable." The matter was then referred to McGowan for a final ruling.
Chevron is operator of the proposed Gorgon project in partnership with Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobile Corp. The project involves a two-train, 10 million metric ton per-year LNG plant and a domestic gas facility on Barrow Island, located off Australia's northwest coast.
